• Volunteer Opportunities

    Thank you for your interest with PAWS. There are many volunteer opportunities available. To learn more about our different volunteer opportunities, please read through the descriptions below.
     

    For New Volunteers

    Cat Care Volunteer
     
    Training: Two-part Cat Care training required followed by one mentor shift
    Available Shifts: Every morning from 8am - 11am and every night from 5pm – 7pm
    Requirements:
    • Tend to cats in the following manners:
    • Provide food and clean water to all cats in residence.
    • Clean cat areas by changing bedding when needed, straightening cat cages, and scooping litter boxes.
    • Give medications to cats as required.
    • Disinfect cages as needed.
    • Help shift leaders with general cleaning duties such as vacuuming, laundry, dishes, etc.
     
    Cat Floor Volunteer
     
    Training: 1 hour Floor Volunteer Training & Mentor Shift required
    Available Shifts: 11- 1:30pm and 1:30 – 4pm on Weekends; 5-7pm on Mon; 11am – 2pm on Tues; 5-7pm on Wed
    Requirements:
    • Greet visitors to the cat wing.
    • Talk to potential adopters, helping individuals select an appropriate cat.
    • Assist potential adopters by taking cats/kittens to a meet and greet room for introductions.
    • Familiarize yourself with the cats in residence.
    • Spend time with cats for socialization.
    • Help to maintain cleanliness of the center and cats’ living areas as needed.
    • Assist with tasks as needed (e.g. laundry, dishes).
    • Know how to correctly access information and provide accurate information for all cats.
     
    Cat Foster
     
    Training: No Training; Application process required
    Available Shifts: Receive 25 volunteer hrs/month for fostering
    Requirements:
    • Spend time playing with/exercising foster cat daily.
    • Observe foster cat for signs of illness and alert PAWS if there is a need for veterinary care or treatment.
    • Contribute information on foster cat to keep cage cards and website information up to date.
    • Drop off cats/kittens at PAWS Friday night or Saturday morning for weekend showings and pick up on Sunday afternoon every weekend. Early or late pickups may be arranged to fit your schedule.
    • Provide a safe and loving home, caring for your cat in accordance with all PAWS medical and adoption procedures.
     
    Dog Care Volunteer
     
    Training: 1.5 hour Dog Care Core Training required; Mentor Shift Required
    Available Shifts: Mornings and Evenings every day of the week
    Requirements:
    • Provide assigned food and clean water to dogs in residence.
    • Clean dog kennels by spot cleaning, changing bedding, and replacing toys as needed
    • Give medications to dogs as required
    • Help maintain general cleanliness of the center
    • Disinfect kennels as needed.
    • Collect, clean, and/or refill Kongs as needed.
    • Walk/exercise dogs in accordance with PAWS Dog Handling Guidelines.
    • Visit with dogs in meet and greet rooms in accordance with PAWS dog handling procedures.
     
    Dog Floor Volunteer
     
    Training: Dog Care Core training required; Floor Volunteer training also required
    Available Shifts: Weekends: 11am – 4pm; Mon: 5-7pm; Tues: 11am – 2pm; Wed: 5-7pm
    Requirements:
    • Greet visitors to the dog wing
    • Talk to potential adopters, helping individuals select an appropriate dog to meet
    • Assist potential adopters by taking dogs to a meet and greet room for introductions
    • Monitor interactions between potential adopters and dogs
    • Become familiar with dogs in residence
    • Know how to correctly access information and provide accurate information for all dogs
    • Spend time with dogs for socialization and walk dogs for exercise when the center is not busy
    • Help to maintain cleanliness of the center and dogs’ living areas as needed
    • Assist with tasks as needed (e.g. laundry, dishes, filling Kongs)
     
    Sunday Dog Showing Volunteer
     
    Training: Dog Floor Training or Individual Training required
    Available Shifts: Sundays 11:30am – 2pm (rain or shine)
    Requirements:
    • Become familiar with assigned adoptable dog by reviewing kennel and website information.
    • Show dog to appropriate people looking to adopt.
    • Walk/exercise/play with dog throughout the showing.
    • Alert Adoption Counselor when a family or individual is interested in applying to adopt.
    • Follow PAWS dog handling procedures at all time and represent PAWS in a professional manner, treating all visitors warmly.
     
    Dog Foster
     
    Training: Application process required
    Available Shifts: From home; get 25 volunteer hrs/month
    Requirements:
    • Spend time playing with/exercising foster dog daily.
    • Observe foster dog for signs of illness and alert PAWS if there is a need for veterinary care or treatment.
    • Contribute information on foster dog to keep census and website information up to date.
    • Attend weekly dog showing on Sunday from 12-2.
    • Provide a safe and loving home, caring for your dog in accordance with all PAWS medical and adoption procedures.
     
    Front Desk Volunteer
     
    Training: 1.5 hour training required
    Available Shifts: 11am – 4pm on Sat/Sun; 5-7pm on Mon; 11-2pm on Tues; 5-7pm on Wed
    Requirements:
    • Welcome all volunteers and visitors to PAWS warmly, answering questions and directing visitors appropriately.
    • Accept donations from visitors, give receipts for in kind donations, and thank donors on behalf of PAWS.
    • Answer phones and provide accurate information to callers.
    • Answer phones and take information on dog and cat surrenders and lost/found dogs and cats.
    • Help with administrative PAWS projects as needed.
    • Work closely with other volunteers on duty and the Director of Operations to ensure that all information given out is completely accurate and in line with all PAWS policies and guidelines.
     
     

    For Experienced Volunteers:

    Cat Adoption Counselor
     
    Training: Cat Floor training and individual training required; Care Volunteer training helpful but not required.  Must have been an active and dependable PAWS volunteer for at least 4 months prior to training. Must have completed Floor Volunteer training and worked a minimum of 3 shifts. 
    Available Shifts: 11- 1:30pm and 1:30 – 4pm on Weekends; 5-7pm on Mon; 11am – 2pm on Tues; 5-7pm on Wed
    Requirements:
    • Talk to potential adopters about PAWS adoption requirements.
    • Review adoption applications with potential adopters.
    • Discuss relevant adoption and responsible ownership information as needed.
    • Process applications in accordance with all PAWS policies and procedures.
    • Coordinate adoption completion times with adopters, foster homes, and medical team.
    • Serves as the lead volunteer during shift.
     
    Cat Shift Leader
     
    Training: Cat Care Core Training; Must be a weekly volunteer
    Available Shifts: Any Cat Core shift in need of a shift leader
    Requirements:
    • Serve as the lead volunteer and be readily available during cat care shift.
    • Stay up-to-date on cat care policies and procedures, specific cat information, and specific care updates, and ensure all volunteers on shift are informed and up-to-date.
    • Ensure wing is properly closed at the end of shift.
    • Provide direction, guidance, and training to shift volunteers.
    • Inform the Director of Operations and/or the medical team of any problems with a cat.
    • Inform the Director of Operations and/or Volunteer Recruitment Coordinator of problems encountered with team members.
     
    Cat Mentor
     
    Training: Individual Training Required; Must be a shift regular
    Available Shifts: N/A
    Requirements:
    • Complete post-training check list to train new volunteers on-the-job.
    • Stay up-to-date on cat care policies and procedures, specific cat information, and specific care updates. Foster a welcoming environment for new volunteers and remain readily available for follow-up training sessions with mentees.
    • Communicate with Cat Mentor Coordinator about mentees.
     
    Cat Line Volunteer
     
    Training: Individual Training Required
    Available Shifts: Voicemail checks and call backs can be made from home and is done on a rotating basis with each shift lasting one week.
    Requirements:
    • Check voicemails left on the PAWS cat line.
    • Provide daily call backs on any phone calls regarding cats.
    • Provide necessary assistance and information to individual callers to include (but not limited to): surrender of a cat, help with cat behavioral problems, lost/found cats, emergency medical assistance for stray cats.
    • Enter information from phone calls into the appropriate online database.
     
    Cat Pet Partner (PP)
     
    Training: Cat Care Core Training Required, volunteers have to be regular for at least 3 months before being a PP
    Available Shifts: Volunteers with a key can work as a Pet Partner whenever convenient for him/her. Volunteers without a key should coordinate with the Pet Partner coordinator. 
    Requirements:
    • Spend time with a cat needing socialization.
    • Pet Partners must spend at least ½ hour three times per week with their chosen cat.
    • Provide updates/progress reports to the Cat Pet Partner coordinator.
     
    Dog Shift Leader
     
    Training: Must be a regular (weekly) volunteer
    Available Shifts: Any shifts without a shift leader
    Requirements:
    • Serve as the lead volunteer and be readily available during dog care shift.
    • Stay up-to-date on dog care policies and procedures, specific dog information, and specific care updates, and ensure all volunteers on shift are informed and up-to-date.
    • Ensure wing is properly closed at the end of shift.
    • Provide direction, guidance, and training to shift volunteers.
    • Inform the Director of Operations and/or the medical team of any problems with a dog.
    • Inform the Director of Operations of problems encountered with team members.
     
    Dog Adoption Counselor
     
    Training: Dog Floor and individual training required; Floor Care experience helpful but not required. Must have been an active and dependable PAWS volunteer for at least 4 months prior to training. Must have completed Floor Volunteer training and worked a minimum of 3 shifts. It is preferable for Adoption Counselors to have also completed Care Training.
    Available Shifts: 11-1:30pm and 1:30pm – 4pm on Sat/Sun; 5-7pm on Mon; 11am – 2pm on Tues; 5-7pm on Wed
    Requirements:
    • Talk to potential adopters, helping individuals select an appropriate dog to meet; whenever possible, without walking them through the kennels.
    • Review adoption applications with potential adopters.
    • Discuss relevant adoption and responsible ownership information on housebreaking, pet introductions, crate training, separation anxiety, appropriate vaccination and medical care, etc. as needed.
    • Process applications in accordance with all PAWS policies and guidelines.
    • Coordinate adoption completion times with adopters, foster homes, and medical team.
    • Maintain familiarity with all PAWS policies and procedures and represent PAWS in a professional manner, treating all visitors warmly.
    • Serve as the lead volunteer during floor volunteer shift.
     
    Dog Volunteer Mentor
     
    Training: Individual training required; Must be weekly shift regular
    Available Shifts: On current shift
    Requirements:
    • Complete post-training check list to train new volunteers on-the-job.
    • Stay up-to-date on dog care policies and procedures, specific dog information, and specific care updates. Foster a welcoming environment for new volunteers and remain readily available for follow-up training sessions with mentees.
     
    Dog Line Volunteer
     
    Training: Individual training required
    Available Shifts: Voicemail checks and call backs can be made from home
    Requirements:
    • Check voicemails left on the PAWS dog line.
    • Provide daily call backs on any phone calls regarding dogs.
    • Provide necessary assistance and information to individual callers to include (but not limited to): surrender of a dog, referral to veterinarians and trainers for callers seeking help with dog behavioral problems, lost/found dogs.
    • Enter information from phone calls into the appropriate online database.
    • Keep databases up to date by periodically contacting lost/found and surrender callers.
    • Maintain familiarity with PAWS policies and procedures and represent PAWS in a professional manner, stressing concern and individual consideration on behalf of PAWS for every dog/puppy discussed.
     

    Other Volunteer Opportunities:

    Landscaping Volunteer
     
    Training: No training needed; contact coordinator
    Available Shifts: When needed
    Requirements:
    • Mow grass (PAWS has 10 acres to keep up).
    • Mulch trees.
    • Water/plant flower beds.
    • Remove rocks from the fields to facilitate mowing and safe dog walking.
    • Work on other seasonal chores as they present themselves.
     
    Community Service Supervisor
     
    Training: Individual Training Required
    Requirements:
    • Supervise individuals completing community service hours at the PAWS center.
    • Maintain and submit list of hours completed/individual.
     
    IT Volunteer
     
    Training: Individual training required; must have some experience with computers
    Available Shifts: Can be done from home
    Requirements:
    • Update software on computers at the PAWS Education and Adoption Center as needed.
    • Repair computers as needed at the PAWS Education and Adoption Center.
    • Assist with maintenance of the PAWS website.
    • Help, as possible, with consolidating programs and databases with new software/systems to prevent duplication of data entry.
    • Train volunteers as needed on new software/programs.
     
    Publicity Team Volunteer
     
    Training: Individual Training required
    Available Shifts: Meetings once a month; most work done primarily from home
    Requirements:
    • Work in cooperation with the Publicity Director and specific publicity coordinators to promote PAWS in a coordinated, coherent, and effective manner.
    • Publicity team volunteers ideally possess skills in fields such as publicity, graphic design, photography, event planning, stewardship, and/or marketing.
     
    Grant Writing Volunteer
     
    Training: Individual training required
    Available Shifts: When needed
    Requirements:
    • Seek out foundations that contribute to animal welfare organizations.
    • Write and submit grants on behalf of PAWS.
     
    Events Planning Volunteer
     
    Training: Individual training required
    Available Shifts: As needed
    Requirements:
    • Plan/oversee completion of all aspects of PAWS fundraising events (subcommittees for each event which occur throughout the year).
