Cats have a transparent inner-eyelid called a nictitating membrane. This inner-eyelid serves to help protect the eyes from dryness and damage. When the cat is ill, the nictitating membrane often closes partially, making it visible to the observer. Other animals that have a nictating membrane include species of birds and reptiles.
