Dog days
The origin of The Dog Days of Summer, those long, sweltering days, goes back to the naming of Sirius, the 'Dog' Star. Sirius is the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major (Canis means Dog) and is the brightest star visible in the northern hemisphere. The ancient Egyptians called Sirius the 'dog star', after their god Osirus, whose head in pictograms resembled that of a dog. In Egypt, Sirius shines for most of the summer, and the Egyptians believed that the additional light from this bright star caused the hot summer days.
