  • Cat Volunteer Training Dates...

    Please consider spending a few hours each week with the PAWS cats. Without consistent, regular volunteers, PAWS is limited as to how many animals we can help! Once you've filled out your Volunteer Application online, you can  RSVP by contacting the trainer listed next to the date you are available. Attendance is limited to 8 persons per session, so advance registration is required. Training dates are subject to change. Be sure to include contact information so that we can reach you if the session must be rescheduled.

This petite green-eyed Daisy needs lots of TLC to help her blossom!
 
Daisy is a shy but affectionate girl. If you approach her slowly and quietly, she will rub her head against your hand, but sudden movements and noises still alarm her. Coax Daisy with gentle word and she will extend her chin for you to rub. You may even hear a low, rumbling purr. Daisy is a social eater. She enjoys being talked to and petted while she nibbles away....accommodate her and you've found a really good way to build her trust! Let Daisy come to you rather than forcing yourself on her. And if you must pick her up, do it while she is next to you on the couch rather than picking her up from on the floor. Although she "gets along" with other cats at the Center, she gets along by retreating or ignoring them. Daisy needs a quiet, patient, adult home and would be happiest as your only cat.

Mattie

No, you didn’t have double vision or worse. For a time, Mattie and three other cats who looked enough like him to present an identity challenge were in residence at PAWS at the same time. Mattie was the least assertive of the four, so he got lost in the shuffle of black and whites. That’s all changed now…two of the four have been adopted…so it’s time for Mattie to come into his own.

Mattie was a very hungry stray who found a caring person to provide for him until he could come to PAWS. He adjusted well to indoor life with his rescuer and seemed completely satisfied watching the birds and other animals in the yard. We’re told that Mattie’s a real talker…especially in the morning. He knows “breakfast” and makes sure his people don’t forget! He enjoys being petted, but doesn’t like to be approached head on…perhaps he was struck in the face at some time? It’s best to pet him on the back and slowly move your hand to the top of his head. Then you can do what he loves the most…run your finger from his nose to the top of his head, then on down his back to the tip of his tail.
 
In the adoption center, Mattie is slowly deciding that people are fun, not the scary creatures he first thought us to be. He’s smart and very interested and responsive to what’s going on, but he can be overwhelmed when there are too many people and/or cats around him at once. Never aggressive, he simply seeks safety away from it all. Catch him alone, chillin’ on the Cattery desk, and he’s a sweetheart. From what we’ve observed, Mattie will be a great companion in a quiet adult household. He wouldn’t necessarily have to be your only cat, but he’s likely to keep his distance from any housemates and definitely wouldn’t appreciate a crowd! If you need someone to keep you from hitting the snooze alarm too many times, you need Mattie! :)

During the week, dear Evey hangs out at Centre Hall Pet Supply, 2780 Earlystown Rd., Centre Hall (next to All Creatures Veterinary Care). See her there Tue.-Fri., 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Evey comes back to the Adoption Center on the weekends.

On a cold and snowy night almost four years ago, Evey was found under a dumpster outside of a bar. She came right up to the person who had noticed her there, so the woman went inside to ask if the kitten had a home. She did not, although the bar owner had been feeding her for a couple of weeks. “She has one now,” the woman said as she scooped Evey up and took her home. Unfortunately, one current member of the household is not a lover of cats, thus Evey is shopping for a new home. :( After such a rough introduction to the outdoors, Every still loves to be outside, so she might be happiest as an indoor/outdoor kitty so long as the location is safe and her outdoor time is restricted and closely-monitored.
 
Evey soaks up attention and purrs her approval loudly. She does not like to be held in a tight grip, but asks that you hold and carry her gently. She’s good with other cats, with dogs (the new Great Dane puppy at Centre Hall Pet supply can attest to that!), and with most people. She loves to curl up and sleep with her good pal “Shaggy” and would really be excited to be chosen by a family who would adopt him too.

You may wonder how a pretty little gal like me ended up with a name like “Gummy Bear!” If you guessed it’s ‘cause I don’t have a lot of teeth….well, you guessed right. About a year ago, I was brought to a spay/neuter clinic for feral cats. I was in terrible shape overall. The kind doc removed a polyp the size of a walnut from my ear, and one of my canine teeth just fell out right there at the clinic! Although I wasn’t what you’d call “socialized” at the time, the good folks at the clinic knew I’d probably never survive the winter if I were returned to my colony.
 
Enter PAWS! A PAWS volunteer who was assisting at the clinic took me home and fostered me for quite awhile before I was ready to look for a home of my own. Within the first month, foster mom noticed my other canine tooth just dangling….and pulled it out. Ouch! Turns out just about all my teeth are gone, but despite the ear polyp and the absence of teeth, it doesn’t appear to volunteers that I have any significant hearing loss, and I definitely don’t have any trouble eating! I absolutely LOVE soft food, but have no problem with dry either.
 
Although I came from a feral colony, I was never aggressive. In fact, I’m very, very shy. And while I’m not ready to be picked up by just any human, I no longer cower when a volunteer comes into my room, and I’m starting to really enjoy petting. I get along with my three feline roomies, and in my foster home I loved the resident cats, especially a blind fellow named Saffron. I liked to sleep with him. :) Given my late introduction to indoor life, I’m looking for a quiet household and would really love to have at least one other cat who’d like to be friends. – Love, Gummy Bear

The PAWS family is just getting to know Sweet Pea, so much of what we have to report comes from her previous family. Please click below for "more information on Sweet Pea" to read about "P" at home.
 
What we can say is that in the time she's been with us, Sweet Pea has lightened up tremendously from the terrified gal who greeted us the first few days. She looks forward to visitors, jumps down from her window seat to greet us and wants to follow us out of the room. Although she won't jump into your lap on command, as she did in her former home, she'll allow you to pick her up and put her beside you for petting. She doesn't stay long, but a little longer each time. At first Sweet Pea didn't seem interested in toys. From what her family tells us, it could be that the stuff we've offered her is just too "fancy"....she apparently prefers the everyday shopping bag...paper or plastic...newspapers, etc. She recently latched onto her Play Pal's long fleece wand, though, chased it one end of the room to the other, leaping in the air, and eventually...when Pal let go...dragging it off to her bed. Great exercise! "Whew, that made me hungry" she said.
 
Sweet Pea does not like dogs and had issues with the family’s toddler…the latter accounting for why she is now with PAWS. The family had a second cat and the two both fought and played. At the Center, Sweet Pea’s nose works overtime picking up “other cat” smells volunteers bring in on their clothes. Her eyes grow large! We’re not sure yet whether this is merely curiosity or whether she’s telling us “no” to other cats. As time goes on, she's becoming less distracted by these smells, but we're still not sure how she'd do with another cat. No doubt she wouldn't seriously object to being your "one and only". :)

Boots

Don’t be surprised to find Boots all dressed up in his tuxedo but hunkered down in his litterbox when you visit him at the Center! He will greet you with a low growl which does NOT translate “I’m a mean guy”, but rather “I’m scared to death, I don’t like this place, and I really don’t understand why I have to come here every weekend!” Boots is just one of so many cats who are intimidated by new environments but are just the opposite at home.
 
In his foster home, Boots is friendly and affectionate. Brother to Socks (see below), he is the “alpha” of the two siblings and Socks’ port in the storm. He is well-behaved (always uses his litterbox, never tries to get out of the house), enjoys playing with toys and, believe it or not, is a lap cat! And he enjoys sleeping in foster dad's bed at night with his sister. Boots hasn't had any problem in his limited experience with children. For Socks’ sake, probably moreso than for Boots, we’d like to see this brother/sister combo find a home together. Ignore the growl, folks – it’s all for show. :)

Socks

Across the aisle from her just-a-little-braver brother, you’ll find another great-looking tuxedo all dressed for the dance. Yup, you'll probably find Socks curled in her litterbox, ready to greet you with the same low growl you heard from Boots. Socks is very shy and timid initially, moreso than her brother. In fact, she runs to Boots when she’s scared and seems to depend upon his presence.
 
Like Boots, though, Socks loves affection once she warms up to her environment. She does get nervous when being picked up, so she’s not quite ready to qualify as a “lap cat”. But she enjoys sleeping on her foster’s bed with Boots, and has become SO attention-seeking she's starting to wear her foster out! Like her brother, Socks is a well-behaved kitty (uses her box faithfully and has never tried to get out of the house). Socks likes to play and especially loves to chase the “laser dot”! Although her foster has never seen her around children, we can assume she’d be intimidated at first, but probably would adjust over time and do equally well in a quiet, adult home or with a family. She definitely would be happiest if she could stay with her brother!
 
Please look past the scaredy-cat countenance and the quiet growl  and give Socks (and Boots) a chance to tell you who they really are.

Petey is a sweetie!  He’s quite handsome, being all white except for a striped tail and a few orange spots on his head and body. He has good litter box habits and uses his scratching post faithfully. He seeks attention, purrs very loudly when he gets it and loves being carried about….but he doesn’t stay long in a lap.  Too much else to do! Petey assimilated quickly into a foster home full of kittens and adult cats. He’s not an in-your-face kitty, but he’s confident and should do well in most any situation. Dogs and children probably wouldn’t bother him.
 
Before coming to PAWS, Petey had surgery for bilateral elbow abscesses.  The abscesses have healed completely and he can run, climb and jump with no problem, though he does seem to prefer the floor for sleeping.  Because of the surgery, Petey will be at risk of early onset arthritis, so maintaining an ideal weight is very important to minimize stress on his joints.  Canned food is the better choice for him and if he’s given dry food at all, it must be high protein and grain-free.

Monarch and her brother Anderson are two kittens among a 13 kitten, 4 litter rescue. These two, plus two other siblings who will come to PAWS later, were born in a window well at a PAWS volunteer’s house. Their mom took them away and the volunteer thought she’d never see them again…..wrong! Now what to name these kittens? Let’s see, born in a window well…we'll name them after window manufacturers of course! Brother Anderson can be seen along with Monarch on the weekends….Anderson is a little camera shy…his pic will be coming soon.

Hello everyone – I’m Elijah, the only remaining child of my lovely mom, Adrian. I never really got to know my sister and brothers and that makes me sad. But I’ve had plenty of other “kids” to play with in my foster home, and I really enjoy a good romp! Foster mom says I’m ALL kitten……whatever exactly that means. Guess part of it is that I don’t stay still very long. Too much to do and, of course, one of my jobs is to entertain my human and her friends and family! Do introduce me slowly to other cats, though. I kinda march to the beat of my own drum, so the others need time to get to know me and me them. I really miss my mom now that she’s living at the adoption center, but I guess I was being too clingy and the PAWS folks thought it was time for mom to have a break…..and time for me to grow up. Hey, I’m doin’ okay, but now it’s time for me to find a home of my own…having another kitten or two who like to play would be ideal. -- Elijah

Hello, I’m Rico. At the Adoption Center I’m considered a scaredy-cat. I mostly stay in...or under...my bed. But my Foster Mom (FM) wants me to tell you how I am at her house. She says I need to be more like that here so I can find my forever home! I have two favorite places at FM’s house. The first one is in a cat bed at Mom’s feet in her office. I love it when she works from home and I get to hang out there all day! She closes the door when she’s not home.... something about me and my one foster brother getting in trouble. We love to climb and there’ve been a few crashes....big deal! She doesn’t like a little redecorating!? We haven’t broken anything! My second favorite place is on the pillow next to FM’s head. I’m there every night. It’s comfy and she always tells me what a sweet, handsome, loving boy I am. :) Relaxing on FM’s lap when she watches TV is high on my list too.
 
At FM’s, I wander all over and investigate anything I think requires investigation. FM says she always knows when I’m “on the move” ‘cause I chirp and gurgle when I’m out sleuthing. Though I’m a big boy, I’m fast so if you don’t want me to go somewhere, be on your guard. I can slip in and out of places before you know it. Must bite my tongue so my gurgling doesn’t give me away! I love to run and play and am crazy about laser pointers and peacock feathers. When you adopt me, be sure to stock up on those!
 
When I first got to FM’s house, I got along fine with her cats - old, young, guys and gals. But all of a sudden, one of the guys started hassling me. He sorta nitpicked at me before, but nothing like this! I had this problem in my previous home and it’s just too much. I must give off some “victim here, come and get me” signals…can’t explain it. I’m such a social guy, I don’t want to stay hidden from the world, so I’d be better off as your only cat...maybe one other really calm, laid back one? Please take time to get to know me. If you sit quietly in a Meet & Greet room at PAWS, I may jump on your lap. And if you bring one of those laser things, you’ll probably hear me gurgle as I track it down. Love, Rico

A real social butterfly, Mimi's the first to greet you at the door, the last to say goodbye. She's still tiny physically, but her spirit is huge!

Snickers

No, that’s not a snicker on my face…it’s my “c’mon in and give me some love” look. :) I’m a calm, friendly guy who has been known to love a lap. I haven’t demonstrated that yet at PAWS…too busy asking for pets and, I guess, looking for the right lap…the one that will be there for me always. During the week, I have my own room at the Adoption Center, and when I don’t have any visitors, I love to hop up on the table by the window, lie in the sun and keep an eye on what’s happening outside. There are no cats wandering around out there, thank goodness!
 
My previous family had a Golden (you know, one of those big, handsome, friendly dogs). I got along very well with him, but…..and this is important...I’m not at all fond of fellow felines. In my former home, I got so agitated seeing another cat through the window that, I confess, I behaved in a manner unbecoming of the good guy I really am. (If you can’t guess what I did, a PAWS volunteer probably will snitch on me). I just didn’t know whether those cats were intruders and next thing they’d be inside with me....or what! When I’m in a cage in the PAWS Cattery on the weekends, I’m not fazed by the many cats there. Although I’m not thrilled about being locked up, at least I don’t have to interact with Harry, Magnolia and the rest of them, and I know they can’t get in my face.
 
I’m not particularly fond of young children either….just too, too much to deal with. So you get the picture…..my ideal new life would be in a quiet adult home where I get lots of attention…. and no other cats please! A dog buddy might be okay if he’s anything like the nice Golden fellow I used to live with. I kinda miss him. -- Snickers

Pretty Girl and her sister, Good Girl, are among the 13 kitten, 4 litter rescue carried out over the course of the summer by a dedicated PAWS volunteer and her mother. Pretty Girl originally was named “Awe”, as in “Shock and Awe”. The rescuers were shocked….and in a little bit of awe…when they realized there was yet another litter! Good Girl is not ready to be adopted yet, but her socialization is coming along. Pretty Girl, on the other hand, is your typical kitten…playful, friendly and a blossoming lap cat!

If you’re a cartoon fan, these kitties will call up fun and familiar images, many of them taking you back to Saturday mornings in front of the TV. Our “famous kittens” started out anything but famously…..on the contrary, they were abandoned in a cardboard box outside a local business….no laughing matter and, just for the record, a violation of the law.
 
Hello Kitty, whose namesake’s delightful image appears on almost every product imaginable, is a sweet little girl, the only girl among the “famous” ones. She’s quite shy, but when she’s petted, her purr box starts immediately and quickly reaches full volume. She loves to play and wrestle with the others and would prefer being adopted into a family with other kitties.
 
Our Morris looks nothing like the famous “mascot” of 9-Lives brand foods. And our guy might renege on doing photo shoots….he’s a little shy and would prefer to stand back and observe. It will take a little time and patience for Morris to warm up to you, but he will. Likewise, Felix and Sylvester….this in contrast to their “puddy tat” namesakes who seem to be in total control (until Tweety Bird comes along). :) But all three are friendly and playful. They’d probably do best in quiet, adult homes.
 
Mooch of the Mutts comic strip often would prefer to stay to himself and play with his little pink sock. Not our Mooch! Mooch is the most outgoing of our “famous ones”. He seeks attention from the person who would be his “Millie” and purrrrrrrrs like mad. Like all of his brothers and his sister, Mooch gets along with everyone.

Leo is PAWS’ very own king of beasts, but like the lion in The Wizard of OZ, he’s still looking for that final boost of courage. “Just wait 'til you hear my big brave roar!" he tells us.
 
If Leo, the almost lion-hearted, is king, sister Kit most assuredly is queen of cats. A gorgeous, regal one she is, with long “model’s” legs and very big paws. Like her big bro, Kit was shy and fearful when she arrived at PAWS. Retreating to the highest level of their cat tree, the two became one enormous ball of frightened fuzzy feline.
 
Such a long way these wonderful cats have come. It’s almost hard to remember the days when only the bravest of the volunteers would attempt to touch the rather fearsome-looking king with the end of a scraggly old wand toy. We’d tell him how handsome he is and what a fantastic tail he has, stroking it oh-so-gently with the wand. Leo loved the flattery, and before long…..we’re not making this up....he started taking pieces of “prime filet” chicken from our fingers, being SO careful not to hurt us. Leo’s trust in humans continues to build….one person at a time...and food remains the key to his heart.
 
Kit made her breakthrough while in a foster home last holiday season. She found her purr and, although still a bit skittish at times, she's inclined to trust everyone at the same level. Kit now looks forward to visitors and says, “Ladies first!” if someone pays attention to Leo before her. But she loves her brother and defers to him when it’s his turn. Watching the two of them try to stomp on a red laser dot or pull it off the wall is so comical you can’t help but LOL. :)
 
Kit and Leo offer each other so much comfort and support that we want them to take the next step in their grand adventure together. All they need is a quiet, adult home and an adopter who is cat savvy, patient and unhurried. From a shaky beginning, these two special cats are writing new chapters to their story every day. Will you help them write “the rest of the story?”

Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, jingle all the way…..!
 

Jingles would LOVE to ride home in a one-horse open sleigh, but…..a closed sleigh is highly recommended! When he first came to the Center, Jingles quickly earned the m.o. of “escape artist.” Having lived outdoors, he had no tolerance for confinement…and in the blink of an eye he could be GONE! He's such a sweetheart, though, he now looks forward to visitors opening his door to love him up and no longer tries to bolt. A carrier is another story! "That’s just too darned much to expect," he tells us. "Can’t even MOVE in one of those things!" Sorry, dude. :(
 
Jingles tested positive for the feline leukemia virus (FeLV), meaning that he will be placed as an only cat, with other FeLV+ cats or with dogs, but not with feline leukemia negative cats. He must stay strictly indoors, have regular wellness exams and quick attention paid to any sign of illness. Now in a foster home during the week, Jingles is doing fine indoors. He’s very playful, likes being petted and sometimes will sit on a lap. He’s okay being picked up and is REALLY excited to be fed! Jingles gets along with foster dad’s cat (also FeLV+), and puts up with Tanner the dog. He can be grumpy with Tanner sometimes and puts him in his place, though Tanner isn’t sure why! Jingles would be great in a house with no other pets, fine with other FeLV+ cats and okay with a dog or two so long as they have their own space. “Meghann is a sweetheart. She was very gentle with two small kids today, and she let me pick her up and carry her. She had the sweetest look on her face after the family left and the Dad was looking at her through the window…the two of them were making eyes at each other.”

These are some of the things our volunteers have to say about Meghann. So what’s an angel of a cat like Meghann doing at PAWS? We don’t know whether she was lost or abandoned, but a couple who had just moved to SC the weekend before Memorial Day found her in their backyard. She was alone and seemed to have nowhere to go. Sadly, the couple was threatened with eviction if they took her in, and despite their efforts and ours, no one ever came forward to claim her.
 
When she first came to PAWS, Meghann was quite stressed, but after a few reiki sessions, soft words and gentle pats (she especially loves company while she eats), Meghann is a different kitty. She sometimes will give little love bites if you stop petting and she hasn’t had quite enough!
 
No one mentioned a purr, but she has one….a soft, gentle rumble that’s befitting of a gentle, affectionate girl. Meghann is ready for a home of her own….one where she won’t end up getting lost or abandoned ever again! If you’re looking for an angel, you must meet Meghann.

Eagles Nest kittens

These three delightful kittens started life “flyin’ high.” But unfortunately, although kittens can learn to do many things, FLYING is not on the list! Their story:
 
Arnold was the first of the kittens to discover he is not a bird. When he was just 4-5 weeks old, he fell out of the side of an old building in a Bellefonte alley! Mom had found a great hiding place for her babies in the eaves, but it was not a good place when the kittens started to wander about…the hole in the building was 2 1/2 stories up. A few days later, Arlette fell out of the ’nest’, and Delaney was found a couple of weeks later. Former PAWS kitty “Steelers" is thought to be another sibling, and two more, sadly, died from falling. :( A 7th kitten was placed by her rescuers.

Super-friendly, purr machine Arnold was adopted in November, so we’ll focus on the girls.
 
Arlette is a little more reserved than her brother but is extremely affectionate and loves to be held. She LOVES to play and ‘hunt’ her toys and is quite acrobatic. A tremendous leaper, she'll jump very high when she wants something. Once you find Arlette’s ‘sweet spot’, she’ll lie with her belly exposed, legs outstretched, and her little tongue will come out when you scratch her in just the right way. :)

Delaney, the last kitten to be rescued, was very scared and cowered away from the others at first. But it was clear from watching Arnold and Arlette romp, play and tussle with each other...that she wanted in on the action! So one day, she just dove right in and became one of the gang. Delaney was like the awkward little sister who just wanted to be included...so she didn't stay shy long.
 
One lovely, sweet and very lucky kitten left. Ms. Arlette is just waiting to fly into a home of her own.

Jasmine is a sweet and loving cat who has had a run of terrible luck over the past 15 months. She was turned in to PAWS late in 2010 because she was highly stressed by her family's dogs. Within a few months, she was adopted….and almost immediately returned. A family member turned out to be highly allergic. Finally, in May of last year, she found her perfect person and was the happiest cat in the world. Then tragically, during the holiday season, Jasmine’s wonderful person suddenly passed away. Poor Jazzy is alone again. :(
 
If you’re looking for a cat who will sit contentedly in your lap, purring away and doing “happy paws” on your tummy, then look no further than Jasmine. She'd run to greet her recent mom at the door and the two would sit together for hours enjoying old movies on TV. Jasmine likes being brushed, but very gently and not for long periods…she seems to have some sensitive spots on her hips and backside. Jazz actually prefers having her coat kept short….”punk rock” style is what her mom called it. Being messy is upsetting to Jazz, but she sometimes has trouble keeping clean when her fur is at full length. A shorter coat also helps prevent those infamous hairballs!

Jasmine plays with toy mice and the laser pointer and enjoys “hunting” birds from the window. She loves being with her person so much that she can get a little swatty when she wants attention but her person must leave. She’d be happiest with someone who spends a lot of time at home or works from home at least part of the time. What a great desk/computer companion! Jasmine is not at all fond of other cats….or dogs…way too stressful! She needs to be your one and only. At PAWS, we're working, through diet, to manage Jasmine’s ongoing intestinal challenges and it will be important that this diet be maintained. A volunteer can tell you more. It’s time for the tides of fortune to turn in Jasmine’s favor. Be Jasmine’s Lady (or Gentleman) Luck and you’ll have a sweet, lovely and affectionate companion who'll be forever loving and forever grateful.

Just like Christmas morning, when presents suddenly appear under the tree, foster mom was in for the surprise of her life when she went to feed her new foster at 4 a.m. one April morning. A family of four! The nesting area was tidy, the babies impeccably taken care of, and mom and newborns all looked comfortable and serene. Oh Joy! Thus, Joy was named, as were her “joyful kittens”...Happy, Merry, Jolly and Glee. :) When Joy came to PAWS, her owner having suddenly passed away, she was “with kitten”, but she was very small, thought to be 2-3 weeks from delivery and carrying no more than two kids. Surprise, surprise when Christmas morning came less than 48 hrs. later!
 
Joy is a natural mom. She does well with other cats and has been a great assistant foster mom to the older kittens in the household. Foster dad sometimes can be a little noisy, inadvertently scaring the resident and foster cats, but Joy loves him! Joy loves everybody. She was a protective mom, but a patient and playful one…..and one who knew when it was time to cut the apron strings and send the kids off on their own. It was time for HER to start looking for a new home of her own. She’s ready, she tells us, and from what we know of Joy, she will adapt well to most any new situation so long as she is wanted, loved and well cared for.  Need a little joy in your life? We’ve got it all wrapped up for you in a lovely little package named Joy!

And she gets along well with the other cats in her foster home.

These two pretty girls came to PAWS just after the holidays. They were scared and skittish at first, but have made good progress in adjusting to life at the Center.
 
Minnie is ahead of Sissy in the socialization process, and play seems to be the key. She will chase anything and especially enjoys toys or fleece on a stick. She's even come to think that sitting in a lap (for just a brief period for now) isn't such a bad deal. In her own home, she should settle in quickly. Sissy (or Siska as one of her pals calls her) enjoys being out and about in the Sunroom, but keeps her distance from people. She observes playtime with intent interest....but still from afar. After a brief tense moment, she's accepting of petting while in her enclosure, and especially seems to enjoy a gentle rub under her chin. Siska will need a little more time, but she's watching others and you can almost see the wheels turning.....well just *maybe* I ought to try this? She will in good time. Since Minnie and Sissy have turned to each other for comfort and confidence-building, it would be great if they could go home together. (Footnote: Turns out Sissy went home with Rocky, one of the girls' roomies at the Center. Minnie's turn now!)

Posha’s foster mom has this to say about this elegant young tortie:
 
“Posha is an easy-going girl with a very sweet personality. She adjusted quickly to our home and has become best buddies with our one-year old male cat.  The two of them play chase and wrestle with one another as if they were siblings. Posha sometimes chases our elderly cat but she is not aggressive.  I think she would do best in a household with other cats or possibly dogs (although she has not been exposed to dogs).
 
Posha is somewhat shy with strangers, but she adjusts easily. She purrs quickly when you pick her up and has never scratched or bitten, so on that score I think she would do well in a household with gentle children. But she does not tolerate excessive holding or restraining….which could be difficult for a young child to understand. Posha is a lap cat though, when she wants to be, and will curl up at the bottom of your bed and sleep with you. She is smart, quite verbal and has a very sweet meow. Want a cat with neat litterbox habits (not the excavator type)? Posha may be the one for you!”

Shaggy

Shaggy doesn’t have a shaggy coat, so why the name, you ask? Reason is his first family’s young son loved Scooby-Doo and Scooby’s friend, Shaggy…..so Shaggy it is! Unfortunately, when Shaggy was about a year old, his family lost their home and took temporary refuge with a friend. One day the good Samaritan came home and the family was gone. Shaggy was still there and they never returned for him. :(
 
Shaggy loved to be outside and his new person accommodated him. But on one of these adventures, he returned barely able to walk. Both of his hips and his tail were broken, most likely in a run-in with a car. Although it was touch and go for a time, he survived...with a kink in his tail, a funny git to his gait and stiffness in his hips as daily reminders of his trauma. Massaging his hips seems to help some, but we’re told he doesn’t always like it.
 
We’re just getting acquainted with this fellow, but we know that he’s good with kids and some other cats…..perhaps females moreso than with males? We were told that he’s good with dogs. He’s “definitely his own cat”, says his most recent person, but he doesn’t seem to be having much trouble adjusting to a lifestyle quite different from the one he’d known. Shaggy does misses his gal Evey, who spends part of the week at Centre Hall Pet Supply.

Cheddar

Everything's better with Cheddar!

 
Cheddar is an exotic-looking brown tabby who was rescued from Hurricane Katrina as a very young fellow.  He has well-defined features and is quite handsome and gentle. Watching this guy drag his very long fleece wand from end to end of his room, loudly chattering all the while, is a real hoot! What he's telling us....or his friend, the wand, no one knows, but he's sure insistent about it.
 
July 6, 2011: Cheddar was adopted in January of this year, but sadly, his adopter ended up being severely allergic. He tried every which way to deal with the situation, but in the end had no choice but to give Cheddar up. :(
 
Cheddar is now in a foster home during the week, and we're told that he's still the nice, mostly even-tempered kitty who left us last winter (the "mostly" meaning that he still takes a few delicate chomps of the hand when he's had enough petting)! He still loves his orange fleece, and he shows a spark of real listening when you talk to him. Cheddar loves looking out the window and is fine with foster mom's young, active dog.

“Lions, and tigers, and bears! Oh, my!” said Dorothy.
 
If Dorothy were swooped up today and came down in the land of PAWS instead of the land of Oz, she’d find…oh my!....the almost-lion-hearted Leo (PAWS very own king of beasts), a sweet little bear with most of her teeth missing (thus named Gummy Bear) and…..our very own handsome white Tiger (with authentic grey/black tiger stripes and a wonderful big head)! Read about the “lion” and the “bear” elsewhere on this page.
 
About Tiger….a cat of the wild he is not. In fact, Tiger is a cuddle bug. He looks you in the eye, pays attention when you talk to him, and loves to jump on a lap and snuggle in tight….like a bug in a rug. Once there, he’ll make himself at home, put his Big Cat head on your chest, maybe take a bath, take a nap…..until he decides he’s had enough. When cuddle time is over, he’ll either leave abruptly or, curiously….you might see him paying undue attention to your hand or arm! Time for you to slowly, gently move your arm away or…..well, Tiger has this little habit of wanting to put his teeth on it and not let go! He’s been known to take a nip, occasionally a bite, but if you pre-empt the behavior, that’s the end of it. He goes about his business. We don’t know why Tiger does this, but he’ll need a savvy adopter willing to work with him to break the habit. First order of business…recognize what he might be up to and withdraw, and never, ever use your hands as a “toy” when playing with him. We would, therefore, not recommend him to a family with young children.
 
Strange habit notwithstanding, Tiger is a sweet guy. He loves having a human hang out with him, talk to him, cuddle him, pet him...but not too much petting. Although Tiger didn’t seem interested in toys at first, he gleefully discovered “Cheddar’s” favorite orange fleece strips and has become fond of balls that jingle and the laser dot. A tall cat tree is must!
 
Tiger is on a special diet for sterile cystitis, which often is stress-related. Could be that the children in his previous home were too much for him. Fortunately, he loves his food, comes running at mealtime, and there’s been no sign of a problem since he’s been with us. A volunteer can tell you more.

Although little more than a kitten herself, pretty Adrian arrived at PAWS “with kitten” and two weeks later became mom to a family of four. Despite foster mom’s best efforts to save them, all but Elijah passed on to the Rainbow Bridge shortly after birth, leaving poor Elijah (see bio below) an only child. :( Having had to fend for herself for we don't know how long, Adrian was and remains timid; but now living at the Center and seeing numerous people every day, she is slowly gaining confidence and courage. She seems to enjoy attention even when she doesn’t initiate it, and she’s finding a “cat dancer” fleece wand most intriguing! Given time and a little patience, this lovely girl will make a wonderful companion.

“Here’s lookin’ at you, kid.”
 
Meet winkin’ Whiskers, a somewhat shy fellow, lookin’ at you with his one beautiful green eye. Whiskers’ perpetual wink is the result of an old injury which led eventually to the surgical removal of his left eye. Winkin’ Whiskers has no problem at all being a one-eyed kitty. But presumably because of his injury or the lingering effects of the surgery, he prefers that you not pet him around his head….at least not until he gets to know you and no longer suspects that you’re up to no good!
 
Whiskers came to PAWS from another rescue organization with his two friends, Dalevue and Big Boy (Big Boy has since been adopted). Although all three were fully trusting and responsive to their caretakers of the past year, it is taking them awhile to adjust to the Center and the many new people they meet every day. If you don’t see Whiskers when you first go into his Sunroom, he’s probably stowed away in one of several safe places in the room. But day by day, he’s getting braver and more curious about visitors, so sit on the floor, call his name, and in the wink of an eye Whiskers will come out to look you over. As his courage continues to build, Whiskers will become a fun-loving and gentle companion.

Terminology in listings...

"Application pending" means that an application has been submitted to adopt this cat. If you are interested in this cat, please keep checking back or fill out an application yourself since occasionally applications are withdrawn or circumstances prevent it from being finalized.
 

"Application approved" means that the application has gone through but the ownership transfer paperwork is not yet finalized. The cat is still at the Center or in a foster home until that is completed.




"Adopted" means that the cat is in its new forever home!
 
"Adoption approved-no longer available" means that the application has gone through and the cat is living with its adoptive family, but the ownership transfer has not taken place for one of several reasons, e.g., a health problem is still being assessed and/or treated by PAWS; a vaccination provided by PAWS has not yet been given; the cat is at least 6 mo. old (7 mo. for males) and will be spayed or neutered by PAWS before the official adoption takes place.



"Long-term Foster" means that the cat is living in a foster home on a continual, although sometimes temporary basis for varied reasons. The cat is not brought to the adoption center on weekends.  Please consult one of the cat program coordinators for up-to-date adoptability status.
