The constellation Canis Major, or The Great Dog, follows his master, Orion, through the Northern Hemisphere's winter sky. Sirius, also known as the Dog Star, is located on the shoulder of Canis Major. It is the brightest star in the heavens. Indeed, its name means "sparkling" or "scorching."

- Winter Holiday Season at PAWS
Visit PAWS thru December 15th during open hours and join in this annual season of giving. The cats and dogs all have sponsorship stockings just waiting to be filled. The online PAWS wish list can guide gift giving to the animals. When you deliver your PAWS gift, please check out the items available in the lobby for your human pals. PAWS merchandise from ball caps and tote bags to shirts and smaller craft items and cards make great winter holiday remembrances for your family and friends.
If you miss visiting PAWS before the center closes for the holidays, the animals won't mind a bit if you bring a gift later. Many thanks, tail wags, and purrs from your friends at PAWS!

Are you interested in becoming a PAWS volunteer but aren't quite sure what types of volunteer opportunities are available? Do you want to learn more about PAWS before you decide? If so, plan to attend an open house for new PAWS volunteers on Sunday, December 7, 2008 at 7:00pm.
The Open House will allow potential volunteers to visit the Adoption Center and to tour the facility and meet the volunteer staff who will assist you in your training.

PAWS will be holding a dog volunteer training session on Sunday, Dec. 14 at 4pm at the PAWS Adoption & Education Center. New volunteers are encouraged to attend, as well as those who are less familiar with the current protocols and procedures. - PAWS Open Monday Evenings
PAWS is now open on Monday evenings from 5:30-7:00 pm. This is in addition to our regular hours of 11 am - 4 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Beat the Monday blues by coming out to PAWS to see our cats and dogs available for adoption!

PAWS gives you the opportunity to sponsor a cat or a dog in need. Through the online credit card and cash transfer capabilities of PayPal, you can sponsor one or more animals on our adoption list for a month. More Information ...
- Come Meet the PAWS Dogs!
Dogs living in the kennels at PAWS are available to be seen at PAWS Adoption & Education Center on Sat. & Sun., 11-4, and Monday from 5:30-7pm. Most of the dogs living in foster homes can be seen at PAWS on Sun. from 12-2pm.
In addition, we show selected PAWS dogs on the 1st Wednesday of the month at Petco in State College from 5:30-7pm.
If you bring your dog to the showing, please make sure …
- Your dog is up-to-date on all vaccinces, including bordatella (kennel cough)
- Your dog on a 4-5 foot leash (locked if it's a retractable leash)
- Do not allow any dog-to-dog contact during the showing, except under controlled situations.
- Do not bring treats, rawhides or other resources

SierraSierra is a super sweet and affectionate 10month old solid black German Shepherd. Sierra has lived with kids as young as 9, likes other dogs, and is house trained. Sierra does not like cats. Sierra is very smart and has a lot of potential. |

BuddyBuddy is a 4yr old cocker spaniel. He's spent time around young kids and does great with them. Buddy is used to staying at home by himself from 7am to 3pm and loves to curl up on the couch. |

GingerGinger the "dainty princess" I can see Ginger liking to be dressed in a designer puppy outfit and carried in a purse! But she can also hold her own when it's playtime with her litter mates. Her eyes seem to water a little and need to be wiped to keep the white fur around them clean. Ginger is light colored with buff markings on her ears and head. ( like her brother Basil) She's sweet! Ginger is one of Sparkle's pups. |

EmilyEmily is a 4 month old rottie/lab mix with LOTS of energy. Emily is crate trained and working on house training. Emily loves to play with her toys and people! Emily is happiest when he is as close to her person as possible. Emily is so loving towards people that she sometimes gets anxious when she's left alone. MacMac is a 3.5 year old Jack Russell Terrier. Mac and 22 other dogs were living in a trailer and surrendered to the dog warden. He has also lived with cats before. Mac is working on house training in his foster home. He will be neutered on 11/25. |

TipperTipper is a 10 month beagle who is very friendly and affectionate. In his prior home he lived with kids ages 15 months, 2 years, and 5 years. He also lived with cats and other dogs. Unfortunately, his family just didn't have time for him. Because of his breed, Tipper must always be on leash when not in a fenced in area. He is a very young man, still a puppy. Tipper is already house trained. Tipper will be neutered prior to adoption. Tipper is living in a foster home. |

SadieSadie is 5yr old chocolate lab mix. Sadie loves people and loves other dogs. Poor Sadie got really stressed out in the kennel environment, but is now doing better. We have found that she is super affectionate and very very friendly. Sadie has never met a person or a dog she does not like! She gets very bonded to people and likes to be close to them. She also really likes cats, and has been around children. Sadie is very well mannered, is house trained, and is already spayed. |

SamSam is a beautiful 8yr old lab/shepherd mix. She is very friendly and outgoing and loves to have her belly scratched. Sam is just not adjusting well to the toddler in her house and needs a calmer environment. She would be fine with older kids who know how to treat her with respect. Sam does not like cats but is ok with other dogs. Sam is living in a foster home and is already spayed. Click on her picture to see another pose. |

ShadowShadow is a 2yr old german shepherd/grayhound mix. He is a little shy first but then becomes super affectionate when he gets to know you. Shadow has lived with other dogs and gets along with them as long as they don't try to boss him around. He's lived with cats and likes to ignore them. Shadow already knows a few commands, loves to go on car rides, and is house trained. Shadow is currently in a foster home living with older children. His foster family reports that he is skittish about noises in the house- for example, he does not like the hair dryer. He walks very well on a leash, but constantly looks back trying to figure out why his humans are not going any faster. He loves to play with toys and is great at catching tennis balls! Shadow barks to get attention or when he needs to go out. Click on his picture to see another pose. |

BergyThis male 1.5 year old husky loves affection! Bergy is an energetic dog, but he is calmer then most huskies of the same age. He has not been exposed to children, but Bergy has such a wonderful disposition, we think he will be fine with children old enough to know how to behave around a dog (8 -10 years or older). We do not recommend a home with a cat given his breed. Bergy is housetrained & has been crated in the past. If you give him a blanket & a kong with frozen peanut butter, he should be good in the crate for quite a while! (Put the peanut butter in a kong, & then freeze it until solid). When Bergy is bored, he can be mischevious, so it's a good idea to keep him occupied! He still has a lot of puppy in him, so he will get into things when left alone. (Sometimes he will chew the remote). So we do recommend crating Bergy when no one is home until he outgrows this behavior. Bergy likes to sleep beside his people's bed at night. He lived in a home with a 5 foot fenced yard, & he never tried to escape from the fenced area. Bergy is living in a foster home. |

KimoThis wonderful shepherd/lab mix is still very much a puppy! Kimo has lived with children as young as 6 years of age! He's good with them, although he will jump & could knock a small child down. Kimo hasn't really been exposed to other dogs, & he will bark at them. He also hasn't been exposed to cats. Kimo is basically housetrained, although he still needs some work on that. Kimo is an active dog, but he can also be a couch potato! He can be destructive when left alone, however that is to be expected since he is still a puppy! Kimo loves attention! He also loves to snuggle with his person & to sleep with them at night! Kimo is a medium sized dog, weighing about 60 lbs. Kimo is already neutered! He is living in a kennel at PAWS & needs a home! BonesThis 1.5 year old male shepherd mix is very friendly! Bones also has lots of energy! Bones has lived with children of all ages & he is great with them (although sometimes he will knock a toddler down)! Bones is housetrained & crate trained! If you tell him "in", he goes inside his crate! He loves his squeaky toys! Bones was attached by a bigger dog a few months ago, & ever since he has not liked other dogs. However, if he starts carrying on around another dog, all you have to do is pull back on his collar & say 'no'. He will settle right down! Bones is protective of his family, & for this reason we think he needs an owner with considerable dog experience. Bones will be neutered before he is adopted. He is living in a kennel at PAWS & needs a home! |

SuzieThis wonderful 5-year old coonhound needs a new home because her family divorced & is no longer able to keep her. Suzie is fantastic with children of all ages! She also loves other dogs & would probably be happiest in a home with another dog that would pay attention to her! She is also fine with cats, although she will chase them. Suzie is an easy-going dog & is very well behaved! She's a bit of a couch potato! Suzie is a very good girl, although sometimes she will bark if she is left alone by herself. Suzie is housetrained & cratetrainend. She loves car rides! She also loves to be petted & for people (or other dogs) to pay attention to her! She loves her chew toys & to lay in the sun! Suzie is afraid of thunder & other loud sounds. Suzie is currently living in a foster home and her foster mom reports that Suzie is a very easy to care for dog who loves everyone she meets. |

MiloThis 2.5 year old black lab mix is a great dog! Milo has been around children as young as 3-years old & he is fine with them! However, he is a big dog (about 80 lbs.) & his tail wags a lot, so he can knock small children down. Milo is friendly with strangers. He is also good with other dogs, although he will defend himself if anther dog is aggressive towards him. Milo hasn't had much contact with cats. He will chase & bark at them when he sees one. Milo is housetrained is he can get outside every 8-hours or so. Milo needs a soft chewtoy to chew on when left alone all day. He is already neutered! Milo was given to PAWS because his owner is moving & doesn't have the time that Milo needs to give him. |

SheilaThis black lab mix is a wonderful, loving dog! Sheila has a beautiful wavy black coat! She has lived with children as young as 10 years old, & she is wonderful with them! However, she is too strong for a 10-year old child to walk. Shelia loves cats, & is okay with little dogs (like yorkies). However, she doesn't like larger dogs. Sheila has lots of energy! She will run out the door sp she can go for a run! Sheila is about 8 years old; she is already spayed & housetrained. |

SkyThis little guy is a lovebug! Sky is an 8-month old beagle/pug mix & has a face that will make your heart melt! (Sky has been affectionately nicknamed Warthog). He is very loving! Sky loves to follow his foster dad whereever he goes! He looks big in his picture, but he is a little guy, under 20 lbs. Sky seems to be okay with other small dogs, although he does seem to be dominant. Sky is living in a foster home with cats & he is fine with them! Sky is housetrained & crate trained. Because of his behavior in the kennel, we will not place him in a home with young children (under 10 years). APPLICATION PENDING |

MaxiMaxi is male & about 8 years old. Maxi is a little spitfire. He loves adults! He is good with children and would be a wonderful dog for someone who has children come to visit (like grandchildren). However, because of his age, we do not think he be appropriate for a home with young children although a home with teens should be fine. He tends to be afraid of bigger dogs and doesn't like cats. Maxi is housetrained and already neutered! |

AndreThis little teacup poodle is a lapdog! Andre was rescued when his owner suddenly died. Andre LOVES to go for walks, even in the cold! He will show his pleasure by spinning in happy circles! He is timid when you approach him, although he likes to check out people who are at his level (sitting on the floor), or are offering "cookies." Andre is good with other dogs & cats! Andre is housetrained & prefers to go outside, but he will use a training pad, if necessary . Andre is older. Because he is older, he will not be placed into a home with younger children (under 12). |

Mona
This gorgeous Staffordshire terrier is very friendly! Mona is about 2 years old. She has lived with a baby & did well with the child! However, she can be shy around strangers, so a home without young children (under 12 yrs.) would probably be best . She is already house trained. Mona is also spayed. GigiThis little teacup poodle is a lapdog! Gigi was rescued (with the other little poodles that are available for adoption through PAWS) when her owner suddenly died. All of these little poodles are older. They are timid when you approach them. However, Gigi is very affectionate & loves to be held & cuddled! She is very lively for her age! Gigi loves to prance & march! She is adorable & a wonderful companion! Gigi is cratetrained & making good progress on housetraining in her foster home. Gigi is good with cats & other dogs, although she will growl at another dog if she is sitting in her person's lap (although she doesn't go after the dog). Because Gigi is older, she will not be placed into a home with younger children (under 12). |

Scully
A Lonely Hearts Club DogThis 8-year old yellow lab mix is very sweet & calm -- especially with her person! Scully is very affectionate & is a wonderful housedog! She would love to camp out on someone's couch! Scully enjoys being with adults -- both men & women! She seems to be okay with cats. However, Scully is not good with other dogs or children. ElvisElvis is a 1.5yr old border collie mix. He's about 35lb and very sweet and friendly. Elvis is house trained and looking for a family of his own. PoppyPoppy "big poppy" has the shortest legs and the fluffiest fur and is the most buff colored overall his body. Poppy is happy-go-lucky and on his own pace. Instead of fighting for the food bowl with everyone, he waits until the others have lost interest, waltzes up and takes time to enjoy his meal! She can scale the wall to get out herself and thinks of the funniest, most mischevious things to do! She is very cute and you can't help but laugh at her - she's assertive but pleasant. AttilaThis little miniature pinscher needs a home! Attila's owner is in a nursing home & no longer able to care for Attila. (Attila lived with Leanyka, Magda, & Chester). He was born on 7/14/99 and only weighs 9.2 pounds. Attila & the other little min pins have lived in a kennel for the past 1.5 years, when their owner first became ill. Attila is very sensitive, & very in-tune with people! He's also very affectionate and observant. You can almost see the little wheels turning in his head! Attila was a show dog when he was younger! He has not been exposed to children. Because of his size & age, he needs a home with no children. Attila marks in the kennel, so he may need some work on housetraining. Attila is a common Hungarian name for "boys". Attila is neutered. ADOPTION PENDING |

MarleyMarley is a very handsome 8 month old yellow lab. Marley is crate trained and house trained. He is very playful and friendly and seems to get along with everything and everyone! He's been through puppy school and walks well on a leash. He's now in a foster home and we'll post more information about Marley as his foster mom gets to know him better. ADOPTION PENDING |

SparkleSparkle is a small dog that looks like a mini golden retriever. She weighs only 22lb. She is very beautiful and friendly. Sparkle is a nursing mom and has 6 puppies, three boys and three girls, named after a spice/herb theme: Basil (male), Tarragon (male), Poppy (male), Saffron (female), Curry (female), and Ginger (female). We have no information on who or what the dad was. Sparkle and her pups will not be available for adoption till the pups are eight weeks old (around Dec. 1), but applications for them are being taken. ADOPTION PENDING |
